Do you have what it takes to be in the million click club? You could take home $5000 cash if you do! Truckin' Life continues the Driver of the Month competition, endorsed by Hankook Tyre Australia. Driver of the Month wins $500, and Driver of the Year wins $5000.
Cover Story
Million Dollar Baby
Last year Andrew Creswick’s Spiderman inspired 2005 Freightliner Argisy took out ‘Rig of the Month’ honours for October. This year his latest creation has earned itself the title of Rig of the Month. The Kenworth T908 ‘Prime Time’ not only looks spectacular with its flaming orange paintwork catching the sun, but the truck itself has been a work of art, and perhaps a labour of love.
Driver of the Year
Top of the World
There were many deserving entrants to the Driver of the Month competition over the past 12 months but only one person could take out the title of Driver of the Year. Truckin’ Life catches up with 2008 Driver of the Year, Owen Orange who accepted his award and prize at the Gala dinner of the Hall of Fame Reunion, held in August.
Classics
For King and Country
Bedfords, Morris Commercials and Austins made miles for The Mother Country, carrying grain and livestock to feed the British during post WWII development. One remarkable story of endurance and hardship is that of the Queensland British Food Corporation who grew, bagged and shipped food to Britain, as well as carting freight, driving children to school and workers to their jobs.
Out & About
Over Land and Sea
Mobile Image Co had to move an outside broadcast truck across the Coral Sea to reach Badu Island for their sports feature of the year. The UD model MK185 was piggybacked from Sydney to Cairns, followed by a ship and barge with a load full of vital equipment. The operation brings a remote island like Badu to viewers of Australia and even overseas.
Drivers
Young Blood
Statistics reveal the average age of Australian truck drivers is between 55 and 58, but hundreds of truckies think it may be greater than 60. Breaking the mold is 20-year-old Brisbane-based truckie Ryan Nichols who has been driving for two years. Truckin’ Life chats to him about the industry and how he got involved.
Walcott Jamboree
Truckies in the Straw
The annual gathering, hosted and sponsored by the Iowa 80 truck stop just outside of Walcott, is intended as a customer appreciation event for truckers, but it carries a heavy local and rural flavour, bringing in farm families from surrounding communities. Despite its casual, carefree presentation, or maybe because of it the two-day extravaganza attracts about 30,000 people each year.
Plus Driver of the Month, Transport Women Australia Limited- a support network for women in the industry and all our regular columns; Yesterdays, Models, Country and Tiny Truckies!
All this and more in the November edition of Truckin' Life magazine, in newsagents October 29!
