Big Chief Many Horses on the milk run

The 730 hp Scania that recently visited the test pages of Truckin’ Life has found a ‘real job’ after months of being paraded around the country.

Scott Harvey from SRH Milk Haulage has taken delivery of the first Scania V8 R 730 in Australia.
SRH Milk Haulage provides daily bulk milk cartage from farms in the Hunter Valley, Manning Valley and Tamworth into Dairy Farmers plants at Hexham and Sydney.

The company runs 35 prime movers and 56 b-double and single trailer sets, employing 80 drivers and staff.

Mr Harvey said he was delighted to take delivery of the most powerful road-registered working truck in Australia recently.

The Scania R 730 pushes out 730 hp and 3500 Nm of torque.

“I heard the Scania R 730 was coming to the Brisbane Truck Show in May and I went to see it and I really liked it,” he said. “I drove it at the Scania customer drive day in Newcastle and liked it even more.
“I talked to Scania about it and now, after its promotional work is over, it’s mine.”
SRH typically keeps its trucks for three years and they can rack up between 800,000 km and one million km in that time.

“I like high horsepower trucks. It is better to have a bit more power than you need, and the drivers also like this. I do favour European trucks.

“I think you get better fuel, faster trip times, and the truck is not so stressed,” he says.
“Our job is time sensitive. We start a new day every 24 hours, you can’t stop the cows producing milk, so the trucks have to pick up on time from around 280 farms each day. The trucks would cover around 1000 km each day.

“This truck will most likely be on the run from about Walcha to Sydney via the Thunderbolt Way several times a week,” Scott says.

Typical SRH b-double sets weigh in at 64.5-tonnes on average, comprising 37,500-litres, using mass management.

Scott will ensure the Scania V8 R 730 remains in perfect condition having signed up for a Scania Repair and Maintenance contract, which means he can accurately predict his running costs over the life of the vehicle.

“I think the truck looks very good,” Scott said. “Most of the fleet is white, but there have been some blue ones recently, but the red R 730 will really stand out.
